Rob Deakin is our musical director and conductor.
Rob started playing the cornet at age nine and
began his banding career at the Worksop Miners
Welfare Band working his way up to 2nd man before leaving to take up the same position
at Whitwell Brass Band age 15.
Rob has played for Whitwell, Dinnington and
Thurcroft Bands and currently plays in the
cornet section of the Thoresby Colliery Band.
Rob is a regular “dep” for Newark
based soul outfit “Big Stuff”,
has worked on shows in and around Sheffield
and has played lead Trumpet for the award
winning Doncaster Youth Jazz Association.
Rob is currently studying for a B.A. Hons
degree in Music at Leeds College of Music
where he studies Trumpet with Murray Greig
and conducting With John Anderson.

Principal Cornet
Terry Brown lives in Mansfield and has been
in brass bands since the age of 13 when he
started with the then Carlton Silver Band
under conductor Bernard Nolan. Terry has
played for Blidworth Band and Shirebrook
Band. He has guested with many of the local
bands in the region as principal cornet.
Terry has been with Welbeck since 1988.
He works in the legal profession and
also enjoys, swimming, gym, photography,
travel, hiking and charity work.
Terry's highlight is playing with 25
other massed bands at Wollaton Park for the
Nottingham Festival, culminating in the 1812
Overture complete with cannons, muskets and
fireworks. Unfortunately due to smoke it
was impossible to even see the person next
to you for a time, let alone the conductor
!
Tutti Cornet
Nick Macdonald is one of the front row cornets
and is brother to Mhairi and son to Tracey
who is the chair of the committee so he has
to behave at practices!
Nick's hobbies include rugby, trampolining
and scouting.

Mandy Shaw has recently joined the band having
played for Cresswell and Whitwell Bands.
She first started playing at the age of 8
and having taken a 20 year break returned
to playing 18 months ago. Mandy enjoys card
making listening to brass band music and
walking the dog (she says occasionally!)
She lives locally.

2nd Cornet
Demi Lee is Mandy's daughter and recently
joined the band having previously played
for Cresswell Band. Demi has been playing
about 18 months and is a great player on
the back row. She enjoys singing and socialising
with her friends and lives locally.

3rd Cornet
Sarah Martin has been playing for around
a year. Her interest derives from her son
who started learning in the B Band , so Sarah
joined in. She has been with the main band
for a few months now and is learning rapidly.
She works as a teaching assistant and outside
banding enjoys water-colour painting and
playing the piano.
3rd Cornet
Daniel Fox has been playing for about 6 years
on the Bb cornet. He is a stalwart of
the band and loves the social side as well.
He is looking forward his new position
in the band. Good luck Daniel.
Outside of banding he is involved with his
local church and also local politics.

Flugel Horn
Ellen Hawkes began playing the Trumpet aged
11 years and joined the Nottinghamshire County
Concert Band, Orchestra and Red Hot Band
in which she played principle trumpet. She
moved to London to do a Bachelor of Music
Degree at Roehampton University where she
focused on Music Theory and Music Analysis.
During this time she changed from
playing trumpet to the steel pans. After her
undergraduate degree, she moved to Bath
to do her teaching degree in Secondary
music. She works as a music teacher
in Mansfield and in her spare time enjoys visiting National Trust properties and enjoys knitting
and socialising.

Principal Tenor Horn
Hazel Coupe is a founder member of the band.
She has played in a few different positions
in the band over the past few years.
She is the treasurer of the band and through
careful management has kept the band going
when other bands have folded. Hazel is fondly
regarded by the members of Welbeck Band.
1st Tenor Horn
Rachel Peat has been with Welbeck
a few months and previously played with Ashover
Band, Shirland Band and Ireland Colliery
Chesterfield Band. She has been playing 24
years and so is very experienced. She enjoys
Koy (fish) keeping and brass banding. She
comes from Derbyshire.
1st Baritone
Margaret Dryden is one of
our baritone players and is retired from
the teaching profession. She is also secretary
of the committee and her work in the band
is legendary. She is very active in fund
raising for the band and is an invaluable
member.Outside the band she enjoys walking
and travel.
2nd Baritone
Lucinda Armstrong - is one of our younger
members and a result of the B band. She plays
along with her mother Judith(Trombone) and
sister Juliette(Euphonium).
Solo Euphonium
Keith Woods has started back in banding after
a 30 year lay off. They say it's always
in your blood so this proves it's true.
Keith is retired from the RAF and his hobbies
include walking his dogs, caravanning, playing
golf and assisting at his local church
in Mansfield.
Euphonium
Juliette Armstrong is yet another of our
success stories from the B Band. Juliette
plays euphonium and sits close to her sister
Lucinda and mother Judith.
Principal Trombone
Mhairi Macdonald is another younger member
her talent is shining through as she is playing
solo's with the band. Outside
the band she is a keen trampoliner, plays
football and enjoys scouting.
Second Trombone
Judith Armstrong has been a mamber for a
couple of years and was with the B band.
She has since moved up into the main
band. It's a family thing as hubby Jonathan
and daughters, Juliette and Lucinda also
play in the band.
Bass trombone
Les Simmons has been with Welbeck since
2008 and plays the bass trombone, this
piece of kit needs serious controlling and
Les seems well able to do that ! He's
adding that extra bass sound to the band.
Bob Kinsey has been with Welbeck for a number
of years and props the band up in the bass
section. Bob has semi-retired but can't
resist doing some work. He is a stalwart
member of the band and always finds time
for rehearsals and concerts.
EEb Bass
Ron Hare started off playing the Euphonium
and has just moved over to EEb bass. Ron
has been playing a few years and will be
a welcome addition to the bass line.
Roy Flinders has been around bands most of
his life and that means for quite a long
time ! He came out of retirement earlier
in the year and now enjoys playing again.
Grandson Chris plays cornet in the band.
Percussion
Chris Clayton is a very talented member of
the band, even at a young age, he plays cornet,
piano and percussion. He was until recently
tutti cornet but moved across to the percussion
where he adds zest to the sound of the band.
Chris lives locally, and his mum Christine
also is a member of the committee and makes
the tea. Chris also enjoys football
where he plays for a local team.
Committee Chair-person
Tracey MacDonald sits on our committee and
has been helping the band for several years
including fund raising and helping at practices
with refreshments. Daughter Mhairi and son
Nick play in the band.
Committee Member
Christine Searston is on the committee
and is the mother of Chris on percussion.
Christine attends most practices and ensures
that the players are given their much needed
tea or hot chocolate. Christine has supported
the band for the past 5 years and is a welcome
face at practices. In her spare time she
enjoys sewing.
